It’s taking little intricate glitches and pitches of the voice that further conveys the sadness of the song. You can interpret this as him trying to convince himself that he doesn’t want whoever his lover was anymore. The “don’t want your body” lyric is echoed by Healy over again, sometimes even intertwined with the main chorus.

Listen to how the band utilizes the pre-chorus. It’s a crash course in the self-torturing nature of breakups. (“No, I don’t want your body/But I’m picturing your body with somebody else”). Healy does not necessarily want the girl back, but it’s hard not to wonder what they are doing. There’s a combating train of thought within the whole song.

Lead Singer Matthew Healy comes to accept that the one he loves has either left or cheated on him. The song’s own subject matter is pretty straightforward and unfortunately, many of us have been through some semblance of this type of heartache. There’s a catch-and-go feel between guitar parts and the keyboards. Upon hearing “Somebody Else” live, there’s a little R&B flavor to it. They take sadness and find a way to create some beauty out of it.ĭon’t get me wrong – I loved the 80’s infused pop songs that they put out previously in preparation for this album. The newest song, “Somebody Else” was more mellow, but reminded me more of what everybody loved about The 1975 initially. “Love Me” and “UGH!” are relatively upbeat and dance-fever worthy. When I reviewed their December show at Terminal 5, there was one new song in particular that caught my ear. Luckily, there are still about 13 left, so there’s still a big sample side to be heard. I Like It When You Sleep., the sophomore album from The 1975 is a short time away and we are about four tracks deep in hearing the album.
